Why I Bought the NutriMill Impact Grain Mill

I’m new to using fresh milled flour, and since my husband and I are currently living with and caring for my elderly mom, we’re limited on space. To keep things simple at first, I bought the Vitamix Dry Grains container, since I already owned a Vitamix blender. It was the least expensive way to start grinding grain, and one more Vitamix container didn’t take up much extra room.

The Vitamix worked well enough, but I had some limitations:

  • I could only grind a small amount at a time
  • The flour came out hot

This mattered to me because I don’t have a dedicated space on my counter to keep it out all the time, and yet I plan to use it frequently. Being lightweight means that I can handle moving it frequently.

The mill was securely packaged inside a thick outer box. Just a heads-up: the words “NutriMill IMPACT” are printed on the box, so if you’re gifting this, the recipient will know what it is.

The inner product box was attractive and informative. One panel lists a variety of items the mill can handle, such as:

  • Flour canister with lid (also includes the Cyclo Cup and filter)

  • Power cord (nestled inside the hopper)
  • 4-page instruction manual (thick cardstock, easy to follow)

First Impressions

The components, while made from plastic, feel sturdy and well-made. The unit is not bulky, and I was thrilled to discover that the hopper fits inside the flour canister for easy storage. Another win for those of us who don’t have a ton of space.

It’s also worth noting that while it’s not flashy, the pop of color on the lid gives it a friendlier, more modern look.

First Time Using the Nutrimill Impact Grain Mill

Before first use, the instructions recommend running 2 cups of white rice through the mill to clean it. I did this, though I struggled a little—likely because I didn’t have the hopper fully locked in place.

After that, I ground some soft white wheat berries for pancakes—and it worked perfectly! This confirmed to me that the issue I had initially with the rice going through was definitely just user error.

In spite of a couple of mishaps when grinding the rice as part of the cleaning process, I ended up with soft white rice flour. Naturally, I tossed this since it was used to clean the mill.

Pros & Cons of the Nutrimill Impact (So Far)

✅ What I’m Loving

  • The flour doesn’t get hot like it does with the Vitamix
  • Very compact storage setup
  • Surprisingly sturdy construction for a plastic appliance
  • Intuitive to use after a short learning curve
  • Excellent warranty

❌ A Few Drawbacks

  • The cord plugs in underneath the unit (I had to tip it to plug it in)
  • The control knob is on the back—I find it easiest to turn the mill sideways to operate
